Tallow FAQs
Is this a new trend?
Tallow is not a new trend. It has been used since ancient times for skin care, soaps, and household remedies. Tallow is also used as a cooking oil. More recently, it offers a return to simple, nutritional nourishment, pure ingredients sourced from nature and prepared with care.
What is Tallow?
Tallow is a traditional skin care ingredient made by gently rendering pure beef suet from cattle. Used for thousands of years across many cultures. It is prized for its simplicity, effectiveness, and compatibility with human skin.
Rich in naturally occurring vitamins A, D, E, and K. Tallow closely resembles the oils our own skin produces. This allows it to absorb beautifully, helping to soften, nourish, support the skins natural moisture barrier without synthetic additives.
Grass-fed tallow also contains beneficial fatty acids including conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), valued for its skin conditioning properties.
Why use Tallow?
Tallow is deeply moisturizing without feeling greasy. helps support soft, smooth and healthy skin. Forms a protective barrier that locks in moisture. Made from simple, natural ingredients. Time-honored skincare used for generations. Tallow is also great for tattoos, both newly done and to replenish older tattoos.

Does grass fed matter?
Not all tallow is the same. The quality of the fat reflects how the animal was raised. Tallow from grass-fed cattle contains a richer profile of beneficial fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins. Animals raised on a pasture live more naturally and produce fat that is firm, clean and deeply nourishing for skin. Choosing grass-fed tallow supports responsible farming practices that prioritize animal welfare and regenerative soil health.
All tallow used by Muddy Water Studio comes from a trusted farm that cares deeply for their animals. They use regenerative farming practices, and all cattle are grass-fed, roam the earth freely, and are not given any antibiotics including no MRNA vaccines.
How long does it last?
Due to tallow being highly concentrated, one jar typically lasts a long time with regular use.
Do I need to refrigerate tallow?
No. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct heat and sunlight.
Will it clog pores?
Tallow closely resembles the oils naturally found in human skin. This allows it to absorb easily for most people without leaving a heavy residue. Some added oils can be pore clogging, however Muddy Water Studio tallow only uses gentle jojoba oil and Vitamin E oil.
Does it smell like beef?
No. Properly rendered tallow has a very mild, clean scent. Any added fragrance comes from the botanicals used by this company.
Is it greasy?
A small amount goes a long way. When applied to slightly damp skin, it absorbs beautifully and leaves a soft, velvety finish.
What can I use it for?
Face, hands, body, dry areas, lips, cuticles, feet and anywhere skin needs extra moisture.
